Major Decisions for Education Funding

cboelter4

On March 4, Governor Mark Gordon signed HB0199, the “Steamboat Legacy Scholarship Act.” This act supports our state’s youth and is a testament to our commitment to investing in the education and potential of our young citizens. I’m happy to discuss the details of HB0199 and how this bill empowers parents to choose the best education options for their children.

The Senate took into account the public feedback and added additional oversight, now allowing for accountability and flexibility given that not every education method is the same. PreK for 4-5-year-olds was also added to the program.

The Senate also changed the funding source. While the bill at no time reduced funding to our government schools, having the program now funded by General Funds in a much more stable funding source.

At the end of the day, this is a $30 million-a-year program. This compares to the $1.6 billion we spend on funding day-to-day operations, including the added hundreds of millions in additional spending for major maintenance and capital construction. This modest program will provide competition and enhance the performance of all education choices.
